Bunk Sandwiches – Lowering Expectations

In typical Portland anti-establishment fashion, the Bunk Sandwiches website says: “We didn’t think it was very nice to brag about how incredibly awesome our sandwiches are.”

OK, fine.  I’ll do it.

Bunk Sandwiches made the best vegetarian sammy I’ve ever eaten.  Ever.

Picture this: Spinach and Nettles ($8) with green garlic, leeks, ricotta and salsa verde, melted between two pieces of toasted ciabatta.  In fact, you don’t need to picture it because the top photo says it all.  Warm and meaty without containing an ounce of it, Bunk’s veggie creation even tops the sandwich I would have ordered had my friend Vik not ordered it:

Which of course begs the question: does a Pork Belly Cubano ($9) with ham, swiss, pickles and mustard also need anchovies, peppers AND applewood smoked bacon ($5 for 3) on it?

Why, yes.  Yes it does.

Don’t forget to add a mini Whoopie Pie ($1.50) and a Bunkmosa (Miller High Life and orange juice; $3.50) to wash it all down.  The Champagne of Beers has never been more classy.

    It seems impossible, but I don’t think I had ever eaten anchovies before I ate the pork belly cubano. I’m a little curious to know what the sandwich tastes like without anchovies, peppers, and bacon–not curious enough to order it without them, but curious nonetheless.
