A Thousand Words: What, you lookin’ at me?

seattle

I can’t take credit for snapping this photo, my boyfriend was actually the one who found the cantankerous feller resting at harbor’s edge. Ah, gray skies and a grumpy seagull — only in Seattle is this considered a beautiful day.

A Thousand Words: Set in Stone

The elaborate stone horses in this picture are part of a stately display at the Guangzhou Sculpture Park, which my friend Trevor and I stumbled upon entirely by accident. Our original destination was Yuexiu Park, home of the Sun Yat Sen Memorial, but a hasty — or perhaps unscrupulous — taxi driver took us to this inconveniently located park in the northern part of the city. It ended up being a nice detour.

A Thousand Words: Add a little sunshine to your day

I snapped this lone sunflower at Elyria Canyon Park in Mount Washington. It’s a sleepy little park (and sleepy little neighborhood) in the heart of the Eastside. Hard to imagine that this is the backyard for so many in this neighborhood.

A Thousand Words: Sunset in Seminyak

sunset

If you’re staying in the popular beach towns of southwestern Bali, watching the sunset is a must-see spectacle. When the clouds are out, as they often are on this tropical island, gorgeous swirls of pinks mingle with the otherwise perfect blue sky.

A Thousand Words: The Art of Ubud

ubudart

You will hear over and over again in the travel guides that Ubud is the cultural and artistic capital of Bali. This is not an exaggeration. Here in the city is where you’ll find hundreds of traditional and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculptures by the island’s best artists.

A Thousand Words: Celebrating Death

death

There we were, getting our Ibu Oka roast suckling pig fix in central Ubud, when we saw a large crowd of people gathering in the street. Groups of percussionists sounded polyrhythmic beats on their drums and gongs while priests chanted in Balinese.

A Thousand Words: Jungle Living

My inspiration of the day — the overgrown jungle at the ruins of Ta Prohm in Angkor, Cambodia. (Click the photo to really see.) A small reminder of what Earth is capable of when left to its own devices. Happy Earth Day, everyone!

A Thousand Words: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I captured this last year while hiking in Joshua Tree National Park. My friends and I spent a leisurely few hours clambering up these majestic rock formations, feeling overly confident and full of sense of accomplishment, until we reached a “summit” of sorts — only to look over to the other side and see a group of muscular rock climbers scaling up the side, their sweaty tans glistening from afar.

A Thousand Words: Fortune Cookie Wanderlust

This was my fortune cookie prediction from a very generic Asian food court meal that I scarfed down at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this past weekend. It definitely made me smile. And it’s one of the few fortunes I’ve gotten where you can’t append “in bed” to make it sound dirty.

A Thousand Words: Happy 2010!

I admit I’ve been feeling lazy lately. Hey, it was the holidays, I worked hard all year, I needed a break, I went… to Vegas! Well, family first, then Vegas. There’s no place else in the world to escape reality the way you can in Sin City.

A Thousand Words: Autumn in Central Park

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2002, the only fall colors I’ve seen are the cardinal and gold of my beloved USC Trojans. Since I haven’t experienced a true autumn in seven years, I sorta went nuts with the photo taking today in Central Park, New York. Here are a few of the good ones.

A Thousand Words: Astor Place

The Astor Place Condominiums have drawn quite the criticism over the years, first for breaking ground and a few years later when evaluating the building’s condo sales. But that is a topic too boring and too beyond my scope of knowledge to elaborate on. I just liked the reflection of the building on the condos’ windows.

A Thousand Words: The Golden Gate

It doesn’t get much more touristy than this. But no matter how many times I cross that Golden Gate Bridge, I always feel a sense of awe at American ingenuity. USA! USA! And just so this post isn’t completely pointless, here is a guide to good lookouts and photo spots for the bridge.

A Thousand Words: Tangle

A whirlwind trip to San Francisco this past weekend left little time to sleep, much less blog, but I did manage to capture a moment of tranquility somewhere in the Sunset District. I still marvel at the tangle of electric trolley lines that cast a distinctive web over this tightly packed city.

My Asia travel companion: Canon PowerShot SD1200

For my Asia trip this year, I decided to graduate myself from my (perfectly functional) Canon PowerShot SD600, which had served me faithfully for years through countless vacations, parties and other such celebratory activities, to the sleek new Canon PowerShot SD1200. I put off purchasing it until a few days before the trip, so Asia would be its first test. Now 700+ photos later, I gotta admit that I’m probably a Canon-ite for life now. Check out the photos.
